Airoforce's first start was on the turf and it was based entirely on economics. His Trainer Mark Casse could have run him in a 42K MSW race at Ellis Park or go to an all turf course Kentucky Downs and run in a 120K MSW. Economics demanded they go to Kentucky Downs where he won a 6F MSW by 3 ¼ Lengths.
The next race that lined up on his schedule was the Grade 3 Dixianna Bourbon at Keeneland on the turf which he again won by 3 Lengths. Using the old adage, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” Mark Casse opted to run him in the G1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf in which he finished second by a half length to Hit It A Bomb.
Airoforce’s next start was the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs in which he won beating Gun Runner by 3 lengths and defeating Mor Spirit, and several other Graded Stakes Winners. His next start was on the dirt in New Orleans – the Risen Star in which he was the heavy favorite to once again defeat Gun Runner.
However Airoforce suffered an injury to his throat that would go on to affect him the rest of his racing career and it was easier on him to run on the turf than the often deep dirt tracks.
