Lone Star Stallions

Our Philosophy on Breeding

Lonestar Stallions philosophy is to utilize the latest technology available to enhance the opportunity of breeding quality thoroughbreds.  We currently offer to match your mares with all our stallions and to then provide the breeder with the various reports and data to assist them in picking the absolute best mating available. We currently utilize G1 Goldmine and Pedigrees360.  Both of these reports give equal value to the bottom half of the pedigree as they do the top half of the pedigree.  Most seasoned horsemen will tell you the Mare makes up at least 60% of what goes into the foal, why then should you base your breeding decision solely on the Sire and Broodmare Sire.  G1 Goldmine looks at the entire pedigree going back 5 generations, (otherwise known as inbreeding).  The Pedigrees360 is the latest thoroughbred mating software in the marketplace and looks at the entire pedigree going back 9 generations and specifically looks at the amplification of breed shaping horses in the pedigree and then delivers reports on sex balancing which brings into play the X Chromosome and mitochondrial DNA.

Pedigrees360

Lonestar stallions will provide the breeder with a free Pedigrees360 Report for your mare(s) mated with our stallions. Pedigrees360 uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze pedigrees and predict the likely success of matings to maximize a mare’s potential.

The Pedigrees 360 software is the brainchild of Leo Tsatsaronis, who was the founder of G1 Goldmine, one of the most widely-used pedigree tools around the world.

“It really is a huge step forward in pedigree analysis and will give elite breeders and yearling buyers an extremely powerful tool in helping predict the likely outcome of a mating,” Tsatsaronis said. “Using AI and machine learning, the program has shown a very high degree of accuracy in predicting which pedigree combinations will produce the champions and which will produce the perennial maidens.”

In designing Pedigrees 360, Tsatsaronis included nine generations of pedigrees for thousands of horses, ranging from elite champions, down to the least successful runners, and tasked the software with finding the qualities that separate them.

While it is important to find the breeding combinations that work, Tsatsaronis noted that it’s just as important to identify which mating patterns are unsuccessful; especially when those patterns involve fashionable pedigrees. Finding those problem patterns can help buyers avoid costly mistakes at auction, and help breeders avoid producing those horses in the first place.

One of the most exciting aspects of Pedigrees 360 is its ability to identify potential quality horses from matings deemed unfashionable by the commercial marketplace.

Knicks Go, North America’s 2021 Horse Of the Year, is an example of what the software can find. Although the horse is the result of a mating involving a low-fee sire, and he sold for a low price at auction, Pedigrees 360 shows the mating had more potential than conventional wisdom might suggest.

The AI modeling analyzed 48 identifiable clusters within nine generations, with clusters being items such as counts of sire duplications, counts of sex-balanced mare duplications at seven, eight, and nine generations, and inbreeding positioning between generation.

It turned out that 40 of the 48 clusters were not significant, but eight clusters showed a clear difference between the “Champions” and the “Slow” sets and those eight clusters form the basis of the cluster chart.

Interestingly, the modeling identified that the eight significant clusters were different for colts and fillies. It is clear there are colt patterns and filly patterns, and that could explain why brothers and sisters often exhibit completely different racing ability.

“Obviously, there are always going to be horses which belie their pedigree,” Tsatsaronis said. “Some which the program suggest are going to be outstanding are actually slow and vice versa but so far these are proving to be a small percentage and maybe the result of some biomechanical factor rather than pedigree.”  As shown on these two reports, “Knicks Go” and “Curlin”, Pedigrees360 is spot on.

"Pedigrees 360 has already received positive reviews from North American breeders."

Guidelines for Superior Horses

The table summarizes the differences between Champions and Slow.

(Legend: O – Off The Charts, G – Green dots, R – Red dots)

Guidelines for Champions

  • ONE single cluster that is ‘off the charts’ as shown by a Green dot that is above the upper range block is present in 70% of Champions.

  • 3 or more clusters in the Champion and above categories (Green dots) is present in 80% of Champions. NEARCO example above has 6 clusters in the Champions + ranges.

  • Champions can have 1 red dot (55%).

  • It is interesting that 100% of Tesio-bred champions have 3+ Green dots

  • It is interesting that 100% Tesio-bred champions do not have 2+ red dots

  • Breeding a horse with 4+ Green quadruples your chances of breeding an elite horse

Identifying Very Slow Horses

  • 2 or more clusters in the Slow and Very Slow categories ie 54% of Very Slow horses have 2 reds.

  • 3 or more red dots are in only 23% of Slow horses but in only 8% of Champions so breeding a horse with 3+ Red dots triples your chances of breeding a slow horse

G1Goldmine.com

G1 Goldmine is a platform for advanced pedigree analysis offering tools to identify winning pedigree patterns, research in-depth pedigree centric information and identify superior hypothetical matings.  The advantage of G1 Goldmine is that it allows you to clearly identify which pedigrees have been successful and which have not, based on real-time up to date data.

Lonestar Stallions will provide the breeder with two reports from G1 Goldmine.  The first is the Stallion Match, Stallion Match allows you to hypothetically mate your mare with any of our stallions and see insights including superior horses with similar pedigrees and our Aptitude profile which clearly shows age/distance of past success.

The second report is the impact analysis.  This is a unique way that visually shows how successful key crosses within a pedigree have been.   Gold and Green boxes signify highly successful crosses with the pedigrees involved. A red box indicates low performing crosses and matings that generate a report with two or more red boxes should be avoided.  The below example is for Justify and as you would expect, it is an excellent mating.
